Ukrainian Banks Reduce Foreign Cash Imports

According to Мінфін — Крипто/Фінанси: During the first half of 2026, Ukrainian banks imported $4.88 billion in foreign cash, an 18% decline compared to the same period in 2025. Notably, demand for the euro has been rising relative to the dollar during this timeframe. This shift comes as Ukraine continues to navigate economic adjustments amid ongoing geopolitical pressures.

According to the data, imports of U.S. dollar banknotes fell by 29.4%, totaling $2.825 billion in the first half of 2026. In contrast, euro imports rose by 3.7%, reaching $2.007 billion. This points to a realignment in the currency priorities of Ukrainian banks, with the euro's share of total cash imports climbing to 41.1% in the first half of 2026—a significant increase over the past four years.

Shifting Currency Preferences

For comparison, the euro's share of imported currencies stood at:

  • 9.2% in the first half of 2023;
  • 26.7% in the first half of 2024;
  • 32.5% in the first half of 2025.

These figures highlight a steady rise in interest in the euro among both Ukrainian banks and their customers.

The reduction in overall cash currency imports, coupled with the growing euro share, may stem from evolving economic conditions and trends in the foreign exchange market. This pattern could also reflect changes in consumer behavior and the financial strategies of Ukrainian banks as they adapt to a shifting landscape. How the currency sector develops further could have substantial implications for the national economy and financial ties with international partners.
