The head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell stated that Venezuela may soon face a "serious crisis" if President Nicolas Maduro cannot prove his victory in the elections that took place in July 2024.

During an event in the Spanish city of Santander, Borrell noted that the data from the Venezuelan opposition significantly differs from the "official" election results.

"If Maduro insists that he won and does not want to understand that for the international community, without verification, the election results cannot be recognized, Venezuela may enter a serious crisis - we are all trying to prevent this," the head of EU diplomacy said.

His comments came three weeks after Maduro announced his victory in the rerun elections, which the USA and other Western countries condemned as vote-rigging.

Borrell urged people to wait and see what happens in the coming days, reminding that to date, 2000 people have already been arrested in the country, while repression against demonstrators is intensifying.

The chief EU diplomat also called it the "height of sarcasm" that Maduro approached the Supreme Court of Venezuela, asking for "protection".

"I do not know what verdict the Supreme Court will deliver, as it is not within its functions to count the election results," Borrell emphasized.
