Cheaper British Missiles for Ukraine: What We Know About the New Brakestop System.
New Brakestop Missiles for Ukraine
According to UATV: The United Kingdom is developing a new long-range missile for Ukraine, designed to be more affordable than the Anglo-French Storm Shadow and free from reliance on American components. Launched in late 2024, the Brakestop project aims to equip Ukraine with a fresh weapons system to counter military threats effectively. This initiative is part of broader international efforts to bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities amid the ongoing war.
Key Features of the Brakestop System
Key features of the new British Brakestop system include:
- A warhead weighing at least 225 kg, capable of inflicting significant damage on the enemy.
- A ground-based system able to strike targets at distances exceeding 500 km.
- An estimated cost of around $530,000 per unit, considerably less than the Storm Shadow missile, which costs about $1 million.
According to the UK Ministry of Defence, three British-developed systems from companies MBDA, MGI Engineering, and Rotron Aerospace will undergo testing in the coming months in both the UK and Ukraine, with the goal of reaching the front lines within a year. All three firms, which have advanced to the final round of the contract competition, state they can produce at least 40 units per month within 3 to 4 months of receiving a production order.
As a result, the new Brakestop system promises to be a vital component of military aid to Ukraine, providing enhanced combat capabilities. The absence of American components also underscores the system's independence, a potentially crucial factor in its deployment.
The development of the new Brakestop missiles reflects the UK's growing support for Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict.
The introduction of more affordable and independent weaponry could significantly boost the combat effectiveness of Ukrainian armed forces, thereby influencing the further course of military operations in Eastern Europe. British companies involved in the project also demonstrate a readiness to respond swiftly to Ukraine's needs, which may strengthen defense cooperation between the two nations.
