UK Regulators Probe Ryanair Over Family Seating Fees.
Ryanair Faces Backlash Over Seating Charges
According to Novyny.live: British authorities are investigating Ryanair for charging families extra to sit together. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched a review to assess whether these fees are fair and comply with consumer protection laws. On average, parents traveling with children pay €9.25 per flight to select adjacent seats, sparking complaints from passengers.
As Europe’s largest low-cost carrier, Ryanair is the only major airline imposing such charges on flights from the UK. Under its policy, at least one parent or guardian must sit next to children aged 2 to 11, making the fee particularly burdensome for traveling families.
In response to the probe, Ryanair dismissed the investigation as
baselessand insisted its
family seating policy fully complies with all applicable laws and regulations. These statements signal the company’s intent to defend its practices amid the regulatory scrutiny.
Ryanair Expands Route Network
Despite the controversy, Ryanair continues to grow its route network by launching new destinations. This expansion reflects the airline’s strategy to remain competitive in the aviation market and could help offset any financial impact from the investigation.
Berlin Base Closure Announced
Amid these developments, Ryanair has also revealed plans to shut down its Berlin base effective October 24, 2026. The move is likely tied to the company’s evolving strategic priorities as competition in the airline industry intensifies.
Ryanair now finds itself under scrutiny for its family seating fees while simultaneously adapting to market shifts. The CMA’s investigation could significantly affect the airline’s business model, potentially forcing changes to its pricing structure. At the same time, the launch of new routes underscores Ryanair’s drive to maintain its edge in the European aviation market despite internal and external challenges.
