Ukrainian Suspect in Nord Stream Sabotage Case to Remain in Custody.
Investigation into Serhiy K.
According to Espreso.tv: The investigation into Serhiy K., the individual suspected of involvement in the attacks on the Nord Stream gas pipelines in the autumn of 2022, continues. He is currently being held in custody in Hamburg after his arrest in Italy. The operation that led to his capture is believed to be part of a special mission orchestrated by Ukrainian state bodies.
Serhiy K. faces charges for attacks on civilian energy infrastructure, detonating explosives, and destroying structures. According to reports, he led a sabotage team that operated from the yacht 'Andromeda'. Traces of explosives, including hexogen and octogen, were found on this vessel. The sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines occurred in the autumn of 2022: on September 26, a pressure drop was recorded in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, and on September 27, a gas leak from that pipeline was confirmed. Both pipelines were damaged by man-made explosions with a force equivalent to approximately 700 kilograms of TNT.
Legal Proceedings and International Context
According to a ruling by Germany's Federal Court of Justice, Serhiy K. held an officer position in a special forces unit of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The operation was allegedly coordinated by Roman Chervinsky, a former Ukrainian intelligence officer. The trial of Serhiy K. is expected to begin in the autumn at the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court in Hamburg.
Additionally, on June 10, 2023, The Wall Street Journal reported on Poland's possible involvement in the events surrounding the sabotage. On August 21, 2025, a Ukrainian citizen was detained on suspicion of involvement in the attack. On October 27, 2023, a court in Bologna approved the extradition of a Ukrainian national to Germany for further investigation.
This case carries significant international weight, as the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage had severe energy repercussions for Europe, especially amid rising regional tensions. The detention of Serhiy K. and the potential involvement of other individuals in the attacks highlight the complexity of the situation and the escalation of geopolitical conflicts. The legal proceedings in Germany could affect relations between Ukraine, Germany, and other European countries involved in the investigation. Furthermore, this case may set an important precedent for how terrorism and acts of sabotage are prosecuted in the context of modern military conflicts.
