Polish Award Rejected by Ukraine’s Budanov Over Snub to Zelenskyy.
Turning Down the Honor
According to Espreso.tv: Kyrylo Budanov has declined the Golden Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland, an award bestowed by the Polish president. This move comes in response to a recent decision made on June 19 by Polish President Karol Nawrocki, who stripped Volodymyr Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle. Andriy Sybiha, who received the Commander’s Cross with Star of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland, has also chosen to reject his award.
Budanov’s Stance
Kyrylo Budanov made his position clear, stating:
“I am refusing the Golden Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland.” — Kyrylo Budanov
He emphasized that he sees “this gesture by the Polish president as not about justice.” Consequently, the rejection of the honors by Budanov and Sybiha reflects their stance on the situation surrounding the recognition of Ukrainian officials in Poland.
This refusal by Ukrainian officials may point to growing tensions in Ukraine-Poland relations and signals disagreement with political decisions that affect their reputations. Given the shared history and current security challenges in the region, these events could have further implications for diplomatic ties between the two countries.
