Sky-High Fruit and Berry Price Tags at a High-End Kyiv Grocer
According to Novyny.live: A recent journalist-led inspection at Le Silpo, an upscale supermarket in Kyiv, uncovered eye-popping prices on fruits and berries. For context, Ukraine has been grappling with rising food costs amid ongoing economic pressures, making such premium price points particularly striking. One of the most jaw-dropping examples was cherries priced at 1,900 hryvnias per kilogram, leaving many shoppers in disbelief.
Oleksandr Saiun remarked: 'When I saw that number, I thought there must be an extra digit—but no, it was real.'
Beyond the cherries, the store featured numerous other steep fruit prices:
- Sicilian oranges: 459 hryvnias per kilogram
- A 125-gram box of blackberries: 800 hryvnias
- A small bucket of blueberries: roughly 1,000 hryvnias
- Regular bananas: 150 hryvnias per kilogram
- 'Baby bananas': 439 hryvnias per bundle
- Watermelon: 250 hryvnias per kilogram
- Apples from Zakarpattia: 81 hryvnias for a pack of four
- Pineapples: 569 hryvnias each
Another attention-grabbing item was the price of Easter breads (paska), starting at 5,000 hryvnias. These figures highlight a broader trend of rising food prices across Ukraine, which is causing growing concern among consumers. The steep costs of fruit and berries at Le Silpo have become a hot topic among Kyiv residents and may shift their purchasing habits.
Food prices in Ukraine continue to climb, posing a serious challenge for many households. Against a backdrop of economic instability, such high fruit and berry costs may force people to rethink their spending and turn to more affordable options. This could ultimately affect demand at premium retailers, as consumers increasingly seek ways to save money.
