Washington and Beijing Have Started Discussions on a Possible Summit Between Trump and Xi Jinping

The American and Chinese sides have begun discussing the possibility of scheduling a 'date for a future summit' in June in the US between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, The Wall Street Journal reported.

These negotiations are still in the early stages and are taking place against the backdrop of rising tariffs and trade measures by the Trump administration against China. These actions are aimed at creating pressure ahead of future negotiations with Beijing.

Trump and Xi expressed interest in a summit right after Trump's election victory.

A meeting is being discussed that could take place in June when both leaders celebrate their birthdays. This may indicate an attempt to reduce tensions in relations.

China is interested in resuming negotiations to prevent or at least slow down the increase in tariffs and technological restrictions from the US. It is noted that the summit could mark the beginning of a new dialogue.

Beijing is concerned that such a summit could damage Xi's image in front of Trump. Therefore, China is more interested in a scenario where Trump comes to China for the meeting.

Trump is in no hurry to negotiate with Xi due to the stability of the American economy. The President has a positive view of the Chinese leader and believes he can continue to strengthen tariff policies without harming personal relations with Xi.
