Avalanche Danger in the Carpathians: What the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center Says About the Risks

According to ТСН: The ski season continues in the Carpathians; however, the snowy slopes carry certain risks. The spokesperson for the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, Natalia Ptukha, spoke about the conditions that can lead to dangerous avalanches.

Avalanche Situation

Avalanche occurrences are a common phenomenon in mountainous areas with significant snow cover. According to Ptukha, avalanches often form due to temperature fluctuations in the mountains.

“Currently, there is a fairly uniform decrease in temperature in the Carpathian region. A snow cover is forming, and the temperature itself has dropped,” said the spokesperson for the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center.

She also emphasized that hydrologists are constantly monitoring the situation and timely warning about possible avalanche dangers. Conditions in the mountains can change depending on the weather, so it is crucial to check the current warnings on the official website of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center.

At the moment, favorable weather conditions are expected in mountainous areas; therefore, the risk of avalanches is assessed as low.

Complicated Road Conditions

In the Ivano-Frankivsk region, due to heavy snowfall, snowdrifts up to human height have formed, which special equipment cleared to restore transport links. The most challenging situation was observed on the R-24 road “Tatariv — Kamianets-Podilskyi,” where movement was temporarily restricted due to snow tunnels on the section of 134-170 km. Patrol police accompanied the road equipment and assisted drivers in getting out of traps.

It is especially important to pay attention to the weather conditions during active winter recreation in the Carpathians. It is recommended to follow the authorities' recommendations and check forecasts to avoid dangerous situations. Of course, one should not forget about caution during travels in difficult weather conditions, as safety comes first.
