Recently, Russian forces have started using jet drones to strike Ukraine. Aviation expert Valeriy Romanenko answered the question of whether Russia can fully transition to this type of drone.

According to the expert, jet 'Shakhed' drones are much more expensive than regular Iranian drones. For example, the minimum cost of the engine for a jet 'Shakhed' is around 40 thousand dollars, while the price for a regular drone is only 15 thousand dollars.

‘That is, it is about three times more expensive. Accordingly, it will be necessary to strengthen the structure, slightly change the equipment, and in general, this drone will be at least twice or even two and a half times more expensive’

In Romanenko's opinion, Russian invaders want to 'exclude from the game' mobile fire groups, which are an effective component of Ukrainian air defense, by using jet drones.

However, the expert noted that the jet 'Shakheds' may be vulnerable due to their thermal signature, and mobile groups are armed not only with machine guns but also with portable air defense systems (MANPADS).

‘And besides, we have received a significant number of Western-type fighters with Sidewinder missiles. There are Mirage 2000 fighters with Mica missiles, which also have infrared guidance and can work against these jet 'Shakheds’

The expert also added that jet 'Shakheds' may only be used as additional drones to complicate the operation of the air defense system. However, due to their cost, it is unlikely that the enemy will completely switch to 'jet propulsion.'
