Food price increases in Ukraine

According to TSN.ua: Over the past ten years, the cost of food in Ukraine has risen by 10 to 30 percent, and this upward trend shows no signs of stopping. When the full-scale war erupted in Ukraine in 2022, some food prices spiked by as much as 70 percent before eventually settling to around 20 percent higher than pre-war levels. Despite this, experts now forecast another wave of increases, predicting prices will go up by 10 to 20 percent in the near future.

Breaking down the numbers on key items

According to analysts, the price of chicken eggs in Ukraine has jumped by nearly one-third over the past year. This hike is especially noticeable in Kyiv markets, where the cost of popular meats has also risen just before Easter. Analyst Mykhailo Nepran explained: “It is impossible to stop prices from rising because over the last 10 years, they have increased worldwide by 10 to 30 percent, depending on the country and product type.”

“On average, we’re looking at 10 to 20 percent, depending on the product and the share of fuel and material costs in its production.” - Mykhailo Nepran

He added that Ukrainian consumers should brace for further price swings, though there is no reason to panic at this stage. Rising food costs in Ukraine mirror global trends driven by factors like higher energy expenses and supply chain disruptions caused by the war. Given this reality, shoppers need to keep a close eye on price changes and adjust their budgets accordingly. Expert forecasts indicate that Ukraine’s food market will remain under pressure, which could affect household finances in the months ahead.
