Sunflower oil prices have skyrocketed: the reason is the worst harvest in 10 years.
According to inkorr.com: Sunflower oil prices have risen due to harvest problems. According to Bloomberg, the price increase is driven by real concerns about a weak harvest in Ukraine and a decrease in production in Europe.
Harvest Situation
The sunflower yield in Ukraine is expected to be lower than the average of the last five years due to dry conditions, especially felt in the southern part of the country. Similar difficulties are observed in other European countries, where a reduction in production of this crop is also recorded.
France, a leading producer of sunflower oil, expects a 15% decrease in production compared to the average over the last five years.
Market Consequences
Analysts warn that this year Europe may face the weakest sunflower harvest in the last ten years. This has already led to an increase in sunflower oil prices at ports in France and in the Ukrainian market.
Overall concern regarding production in the 2025-26 season is due to the fact that Ukraine and the EU jointly account for about 40% of global sunflower production.
According to a representative of Strategie Grains, the first sunflower harvests in Europe remain low, but there is a possibility of unforeseen situations from late crops.
Thus, the problems with the sunflower harvest have already impacted the increase in sunflower oil prices both in Ukraine and in Europe. This may significantly affect the market in the near future, as price increases may affect consumers and producers dependent on this product.
