New Opportunities for Men Over 60

According to Novyny.live: In a significant policy shift, Ukrainian men aged 60 and older are now eligible to serve in the military under contract. This change was enacted by a decree from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, signed on February 10, 2023. The decree, numbered 108/2026, amends regulations that were originally approved by a presidential order on December 10, 2008 (No. 1153/2008). This move reflects the ongoing demands on Ukraine's defense forces.

Under the new rules, a military service contract is for a term of one year. To enlist, older men must obtain the written consent of their prospective military unit commander. Furthermore, the candidacies of those seeking officer roles must be approved by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Significance of the Changes

It is crucial to note that these contracts will be automatically terminated upon the cancellation or cessation of martial law. These amendments open new avenues for older individuals who wish to contribute to military service in Ukraine, particularly given the nation's current security challenges. The policy underscores the military's need to leverage all available human resources.

The introduction of contract service for men over 60 highlights the Armed Forces of Ukraine's need to expand its personnel pool amid the prolonged conflict. This decision represents an important step in harnessing the experience and knowledge of an older generation, which can be valuable in military affairs. Simultaneously, it emphasizes the gravity of the national situation and the necessity of mobilizing all available resources to ensure national security.
