Mysterious creature filmed in the ocean: scientists cannot identify it

According to ТСН: A man lowered a GoPro camera to a great depth in the ocean and accidentally filmed a creature that even experts could not identify.

Although we live on land, most of the planet is water. The depths of the ocean remain mysterious. According to NOAA, only 27% of the ocean floor has been researched, and humanity has seen only 0.001% of the deepest parts of the ocean. Thus, accidental videos from underwater expeditions sometimes reveal amazing and simultaneously frightening footage of hidden ocean creatures.

Research by Barney Dillarstone

Content creator and diver Barney Dillarstone shared a video he made during a dive to a depth of about 200 meters off the coast of Bali. His goal was to find new species for science. To achieve this, he secured a camera on a bait ball that attracts nocturnal marine inhabitants.

The video features various predators and unusual creatures—aggressive eels, spider crabs, and even bearded fireworms. But the real discovery was the fish that appeared at the end of the recording.

Unexpected find

The camera captured a deep-sea ray—a member of the ray family that usually lives in the Indo-Pacific region. Such species are typically found near the eastern coast of Australia, so the appearance of the ray in Indonesian waters was a real surprise.

Dillarstone noted that rays should not exist in these waters: the Javanese ray is considered extinct, and the existence of the Kai ray is known only from two young specimens found in eastern Indonesia.

"So what species is this?" he asks in the video.

Even after discussions with marine biologists, a definitive answer could not be found.

"We just don’t know. It might be a new species for science. You don’t film a creature capable of rewriting the regional species catalog every day," Dillarstone noted.

Since about two-thirds of oceanic fauna have not yet been classified, the likelihood of new discoveries remains high. This video may only be the beginning of more serious scientific findings.

As a reminder, recently extinct Ice Age creatures were found in an underwater cave, reaffirming how little we know about the depths of the ocean.
