St. Andrew's Day 2025: When and How Ukrainians Will Celebrate.
According to ТСН: This holiday has great religious and cultural significance, as the Apostle Andrew is considered the patron saint of Ukraine and the spiritual founder of Christianity in these lands.
Celebration of Andrew According to the New Style
Before switching to the New Julian calendar, St. Andrew's Day fell on December 13. After the church reform that came into effect on September 1, 2023, most holidays were shifted forward by 13 days. Therefore, in 2025, the celebration of St. Andrew the First-Called will take place on November 30.
This change allowed believers in Ukraine to celebrate together with most Christians around the world, who follow the New Julian or Gregorian calendars.
The History of St. Andrew
St. Andrew is one of the first disciples of Jesus Christ. He is called “the First-Called” because he was the first to respond to the Savior's call. After the Ascension of Christ, Andrew traveled to preach the Gospel in various countries, including the future territory of Kyiv Rus.
According to legends, during his travels, Andrew climbed the Kyiv hills, erected a cross, and predicted the creation of a great Christian city. Because of this, he is considered the spiritual patron of Ukrainian lands and the founder of our faith.
Traditions and Folk Customs on St. Andrew's Day
The Feast of St. Andrew in Ukraine has not only religious but also folk significance. On the night of November 30, it was traditionally customary for young women to perform divinations for their future husbands. These rituals were accompanied by songs, jokes, and cheerful games.
It was believed that on St. Andrew's Day, one should not quarrel, fight, or offend loved ones — otherwise, the year would be filled with conflicts. Hostesses would prepare poppy seed pies and boil kutia to attract prosperity to their homes.
In 2025, Ukrainians will celebrate St. Andrew on November 30 for the third time according to the New Julian calendar. Although the date has changed, the essence of the holiday remains unchanged: it is a day of spiritual unity, sincere prayer, and the preservation of ancient folk traditions.
Prayer to St. Andrew the First-Called
Holy Apostle Andrew, First-Called Teacher of our Lord Jesus Christ, pray to God for us, sinners, that He may grant us unwavering faith, firm hope, and sincere love, so that our hearts may be pure and our souls saved. Help us in both difficulties and sorrows to stand in Christ's faith, and lead us all to the Heavenly Kingdom.
Amen.
The Feast of St. Andrew the First-Called has been celebrated since ancient times and is an important element of Ukrainian folk traditions. As this date approaches, Ukrainians not only adhere to religious customs but also celebrate their heritage, preserving the memory of their cultural legacy. Divination and the preparation of traditional dishes for this holiday are vivid manifestations of our identity and connection to the past.
