Ukrainian Lawmaker Merezhenko Warns of Danger in Sending Delegation to Moscow.
Oleksandr Merezhenko's Stance on Negotiations with Russia
According to TSN.ua: Oleksandr Merezhenko, a Ukrainian Member of Parliament and head of the Verkhovna Rada's committee on foreign policy and inter-parliamentary cooperation, has argued that sending a Ukrainian delegation to Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin would be counterproductive. Merezhenko, who represents the 'Servant of the People' faction, believes such a trip could be exploited by Russian propaganda against Ukraine, making it a diplomatic and political risk. He stated that a meeting in Moscow is impossible and that such initiatives only undermine Ukraine's international standing.
"This trip could be used by Putin and Russian propaganda against Ukraine," he emphasized. He also described the potential visit as 'extremely dangerous'.
Context of the Situation
This warning comes after Putin's aide, Yuri Ushakov, invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Moscow in January. Zelenskyy himself has ruled out a meeting in the Russian capital, stating:
"A meeting in Moscow is impossible, just as a visit by the 'führer' to Kyiv."The Telegram channel 'Ukraine context' reported on the possibility of a delegation being sent to Moscow. Merezhenko further pointed out that the Russian negotiating team lacks influence and authority, which complicates the situation further. This ongoing diplomatic tension reflects the broader, unresolved conflict between the two nations, now in its third year.
Thus, the position of the Ukrainian leadership regarding negotiations with Russia remains firm, as confirmed by statements from government officials. Merezhenko's comments underscore the Ukrainian government's consistent stance on relations with Russia, which remain strained due to the protracted conflict. The refusal to negotiate in Moscow and the emphasis on the dangers of potential meetings highlight Ukraine's desire to avoid manipulation by Russian propaganda, which could exacerbate the international situation. These events also reflect a broader trend in Ukrainian politics aimed at safeguarding national interests and security under complex geopolitical conditions.
