Expert explains why IAEA cannot influence Russia's plans for attacks on nuclear power plants.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) cannot influence Russia's plans to attack critical nuclear energy infrastructure in Ukraine.

The head of the Center for Domestic Political Research at the National Institute for Strategic Studies, Vyacheslav Potapenko, said this on the Freedom TV channel.

He emphasized that the IAEA monitors the situation at nuclear power plants.

"To say that if they monitor the situation at Ukrainian nuclear power plants, it will change the position of the Russian Federation – I don't think so. At least regarding Zaporizhzhia, the position of the Russian Federation has not changed. Therefore, here, I think, it is not worth expecting any radical results. Moreover, Russia will say that they do not plan to hit nuclear power plants at all – this is some kind of provocation, and they are hearing about it for the first Time," Potapenko believes.

He clarified that such monitoring is carried out by an international organization according to protocol. Thus, the IAEA tracks what is happening at the stations.

"So if such shelling occurs, then they will be able to analyze some of the results. If no such shelling occurs, accordingly, they cannot analyze them. Well, we have somewhat overestimated expectations from international organizations... They were created a long time ago, in a different world, where, so to speak, the power fields and security systems in Europe were clearer and more distinct. Everything was clearly divided, who controlled what, under whose control the safety of certain objects was. As it was in the 1950s and 60s of the last century. Today, the world has become more blurred, more uncertain, more global, and threats are more hybrid," said the head of the Center for Domestic Political Research.

Potapenko stated that the effectiveness of such international organizations as the IAEA has decreased because the world has changed greatly.

At the same time, he believes that the work of the IAEA draws attention to the problems that arise.
