Cyprus’s presidency of the EU ends on June 30, after which Ireland will take over the role on July 1. Beyond the sanctions, there is also a possibility that the first negotiation cluster for Ukraine will be opened, which could serve as a significant step in strengthening ties between Ukraine and the European Union.
Objectives of the New Sanctions Package
The 21st sanctions package, currently under development, aims to intensify pressure on Russia amid ongoing regional tensions. Approval before the end of June would send a strong signal of EU unity on security and foreign policy matters.
The creation of this new sanctions package underscores the EU’s commitment to maintaining stability in the region and responding to Russia’s aggressive actions. This move could also accelerate Ukraine’s integration into European structures, a key goal for both sides, especially given current geopolitical challenges. The upcoming change in EU presidency may introduce new priorities in the Union’s security policies and support for Eastern European partners.
