Ban on Russian Gas and Oil Supplies

According to UATV: The European Union has no intention of resuming imports of Russian gas and is moving forward with a ban on Russian oil. This was confirmed by Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, the European Commission’s spokesperson for energy, during a briefing in Brussels on June 30, 2023. According to Itkonen, a return to previous supply arrangements is out of the question, as the EU is actively implementing a ban on Russian oil and diversifying its energy sources. This marks a decisive shift in the bloc’s energy policy following years of heavy reliance on Russian fossil fuels.

EU Steps Toward Enforcing the Bans

One of the central measures in this strategy is the prohibition of pipeline gas deliveries under short-term contracts. Additional restrictions on Russian energy imports are scheduled to take effect in January and September 2024. Notably, the 21st sanctions package includes freezing adjustments to the oil price cap, a move designed to intensify economic pressure on Russia.

  • Ban on pipeline gas imports.
  • Prohibition on supplying LNG tankers to Russia.
  • Expansion of the shadow fleet list by 30 vessels, bringing the total number to 662.

These actions underscore the EU’s firm commitment to reducing its dependence on Russian energy resources. The bans on Russian oil and gas are part of a broader strategic direction aimed at diminishing energy reliance on Russia, a goal that has gained urgency in light of recent geopolitical developments. The measures are designed not only to impose economic costs on Russia but also to accelerate Europe’s transition toward more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sources. The planned prohibitions for 2024 highlight the EU’s consistent and resolute approach to implementing this policy.
