Ukraine’s Right to Self-Defense Recognized by EU Amid Belarus Threats.
European Commission’s Position on Ukraine
According to UATV: On June 22, European Commission spokesperson for international affairs Anita Hipper stated that Ukraine is entitled to self-defense given the dangers emanating from Belarus, which continues to back Russia’s aggression. Hipper emphasized the importance of acknowledging this right, noting that
“Belarus continues to enable Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine”. This statement came amid heightened tensions in the region, where Belarus has served as a staging ground for Russian military operations.
Ukrainian President’s Response and EU Actions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also addressed the matter, urging Belarus to remove all Russian military equipment from its soil. Belarus’s conduct has raised alarms, as the country acts as a key ally to Russia in the ongoing military campaign against Ukraine.
In reaction to Belarus’s hostile posture, the European Union imposed sanctions on the Lukashenko regime. These measures underscore the EU’s commitment to standing with Ukraine and condemning actions that jeopardize its sovereignty. Anita Hipper’s remarks and the EU’s steps reflect the international community’s backing of Ukraine amid pressing security challenges in the area.
This situation highlights the critical need for global support of Ukraine, especially as threats from Belarus escalate due to its alignment with Russia. Acknowledging Ukraine’s self-defense rights and sanctioning the Belarusian leadership demonstrate the severity of the risks facing Kyiv, as well as the international community’s readiness to address them.
