EU Imposes Fresh Sanctions on Iran, Targeting Four Individuals and Six Entities.
EU Announces New Sanctions Against Iran
According to UATV: The European Union has imposed a new set of sanctions on Iran, citing Tehran's support for Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. This action, taken on January 29, 2026, targets four individuals and six organizations. The move is part of a broader EU strategy to curb the deepening military cooperation between Iran and Russia, which has become a significant factor in the ongoing conflict.
The sanctions include a prohibition on the export, sale, transfer, or supply from the EU to Iran of additional components and technologies for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and missiles. With this latest round, the total number of individuals and entities now under EU sanctions related to Iran's military support for Russia has reached 24 persons and 26 legal entities. The EU's sanctions regime itself has been extended until July 27, 2026.
Scope and Implications of the Sanctions
Separately, the EU has also sanctioned thirty Iranian individuals and entities in connection with the violent suppression of protests. These combined measures reflect the bloc's growing concern over Iran's actions, both in undermining international security and in violating human rights.
The new sanctions are a direct response to the escalation of Iran's military backing for Russia in the Ukraine war. Furthermore, the measures against those involved in domestic repression underscore the EU's commitment to upholding human rights globally. These coordinated sanctions are likely to further strain EU-Iran relations and could impact regional dynamics, given Tehran's close military alignment with Moscow.
