Estonia Urges EU to Adopt 20th Sanctions Package Against Russia.
Estonia's Call for Action
According to UATV: On January 29 in Brussels, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna urged the European Union to intensify pressure on Russia for its attacks on Ukraine, advocating for the adoption of a twentieth sanctions package. He highlighted the critical situation in the energy sector caused by Russia's military actions. This push comes as the EU continues to seek ways to degrade Russia's capacity to wage war. Tsahkna emphasized that Ukrainian civilians are suffering immensely from the relentless assaults.
The minister pointed to evidence of existing sanctions' effectiveness, noting that Russia's oil and gas revenues fell by 22% last month. He also stated that trade between the EU and Russia has decreased by over 60%. Tsahkna argued that pressure must continue to increase, asserting,
“whoever says sanctions are not working, they are working very well”- Margus Tsahkna.
Next Steps for the European Union
Consequently, Estonia is actively advocating for the European Union to take further action by imposing new restrictions on Russia to diminish its ability to continue the war in Ukraine. The Estonian minister's statement underscores Europe's growing commitment to regional security and stability.
Additional sanctions could significantly impact the Russian economy, especially amid the current energy crisis. Such initiatives are seen as vital for strengthening unity among EU member states in countering aggression and supporting Ukraine's fight for independence.
