EU Expansion Overhaul on the Horizon as Montenegro Nears Membership.
Revamping the European Union's Enlargement Process
According to Espreso.tv: With Montenegro approaching the final stretch of its accession journey, the European Commission is drafting proposals to reshape how the EU expands. In response, five of the bloc's six founding members have put forward ideas aimed at strengthening democracy and rule-of-law safeguards for candidate countries. This push for reform comes as the EU prepares for a potential historic wave of new members.
Germany and France have also introduced a concept of gradual integration for nations seeking to join the Union. The current pool of candidates includes:
- Ukraine
- Moldova
- Western Balkan nations
- Turkey
- Georgia
Georgia holds candidate status, though its accession talks have yet to begin. If all candidates eventually join, the EU's membership could swell to over 30 states, marking a major milestone in European integration.
Why These Reforms Matter
The core goal of these changes is to establish a clearer, more efficient pathway for candidate countries aiming to integrate into the European Union. By emphasizing democratic principles and the rule of law, the EU signals its commitment to ensuring stability and sustainable development in future members. This effort could deepen ties across Europe and strengthen public trust in EU institutions.
