EU Commission Demands Hungary Honor €90 Billion Ukraine Aid Deal.
EU Credit for Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: The European Commission has called on Hungary and other member states to uphold the agreement to provide Ukraine with a €90 billion credit facility, which was reached on December 19, 2025. This substantial financial package is intended to support Ukraine's budgetary and military requirements over the coming two years. A unanimous political consensus on this sum was achieved during the December European Council meeting, as confirmed by spokesperson Balázs Ujvári. This aid is a cornerstone of the EU's strategic support for Ukraine's sovereignty and resilience.
Hungarian Government's Stance
However, the position of the Hungarian government complicates the situation. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has stated that his country's authorities are threatening to block the credit for Ukraine. The potential blockage is linked to Hungary's demand for the resumption of crude oil supplies via the 'Druzhba' pipeline. This condition could jeopardize the implementation of the previously agreed financial support package for Ukraine.
The legislative proposals related to this agreement are scheduled for adoption on January 14. Analysts emphasize that adherence to commitments by all parties is critically important for ensuring regional stability and supporting Ukraine during a challenging period. The standoff highlights the intricate political dynamics within the European Union and the necessity for coordinated action among member states.
The ongoing dispute over Hungary's potential veto underscores the complex political relationships within the European Union and the vital importance of member state coordination. Simultaneously, providing financial support to Ukraine remains a key element for its stability and recovery, especially amid ongoing military aggression. The outcome of this issue could significantly influence the EU's future economic and political commitments toward Ukraine.
