EU Aid to Ukraine Halted by Member State Veto

According to TSN.ua: European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has framed support for Ukraine as a matter of strict security policy, not charity, following Hungary's recent move to block financial assistance. Speaking on the matter, she stated:

“For us, supporting Ukraine is not altruism—it is a hard security policy.”

On March 19, Hungary and Slovakia jointly blocked a €90 billion loan package intended for Ukraine. This development became a central topic at the EU summit held in Brussels. European Council President António Costa condemned Hungary's actions as an unacceptable breach of EU protocols.

In response, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed that the EU will still provide Ukraine with a €90 billion loan, scheduled for the 2026–2028 period. Despite the obstacles in the decision-making process, the European Union continues to prioritize support for Ukraine.

Challenges in Securing Financial Aid

This situation highlights the difficulties the European Union faces in ensuring consistent financial support for Ukraine amid the ongoing war. The blocking of aid by certain member states may reflect differing views on foreign policy and security within the EU. Nevertheless, the Union's continued commitment to Ukraine could shape future relations among member states and influence their foreign policy directions.
