EU Commits €10 Million for Tribunal to Prosecute Putin, as Zelenskyy Criticizes European Inaction.
EU Funds Allocated for Special Tribunal
According to TSN.ua: The European Union has allocated 10 million euros to establish a Special Tribunal aimed at prosecuting Russian leaders for their role in the war against Ukraine. The EU's chief diplomat, Kaja Kallas, announced the funding, stressing the critical importance of holding Russia's leadership accountable. She stated that
“Russian leaders bear responsibility for this war, and they must be held accountable. There can be no impunity.”
Zelenskyy Condemns European Inertia
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized Europe's lack of action on this front. He declared:
“This individual, in the fourth year of the war, is not only not arrested—he is also fighting for his money in Europe. And even achieving some success… What is lacking, time or political will? Too often in Europe, something else is more urgent than justice.”This call for accountability comes as Ukraine continues to defend itself against a full-scale invasion.
In a related development, UK Defence Secretary John Healey acknowledged the potential for the abduction of Vladimir Putin, highlighting the complex challenges surrounding international justice in the context of the Ukraine war.
The creation of the Special Tribunal could mark a significant step toward securing justice for the victims of the war in Ukraine and increasing international pressure on Russia. However, as Zelenskyy pointed out, the failure to take concrete action against the aggressor's leaders may indicate a lack of sufficient political will among European nations. This issue remains crucial not only for Ukraine but for the integrity of the global system of international law.
