Slovak PM Fico Urges EU to Launch Direct Talks with Russia to End Ukraine War.
Strained Relations over 'Druzhba': Slovakia's Response
According to TSN.ua: Robert Fico, the Prime Minister of Slovakia, has called on the European Union to begin direct negotiations with Russia aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. He voiced support for a proposal by Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, which advocates granting the EU a mandate to conduct such talks. Fico believes that authorizing the EU to negotiate could represent a pivotal step toward achieving peace.
“If the European Union receives a mandate to conclude a peace agreement, I would wholeheartedly support it.” — Robert Fico
Fico further argued that continued support for the war has not weakened Russia's economy, making negotiations the only viable path forward.
Additionally, the Slovak leader had planned a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, signaling his country's proactive stance on resolving the conflict diplomatically. However, Slovakia recently terminated an emergency electricity supply contract with the Ukrainian state-owned company Ukrenergo, highlighting the complex economic and political pressures at play in the region.
Exploring Alternative Routes to Peace
Slovakia's actions amid the Ukraine-Russia conflict reflect a search for alternative approaches to peace, especially given mounting economic challenges. On one hand, backing negotiations could strengthen diplomatic ties; on the other, the cancellation of the electricity supply deal underscores the situation's complexity and potential pressure from other actors involved in the conflict.
This situation underscores the need for Slovakia to tread carefully in its foreign policy amid ongoing geopolitical instability.
