Fico on troops in Ukraine: Slovakia is only ready for peace monitoring.
According to ТСН: Slovakia may join in monitoring a peace agreement or ceasefire in Ukraine if the conflicting parties reach an agreement. This was stated by the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, in his video address on social media.
He emphasized that Slovakia will not send its soldiers to Ukraine.
"A group of countries wants to send its soldiers to the territory of Ukraine. Slovakia cannot prevent them from doing so. However, during my government's term, no Slovak soldier will go to Ukraine as part of multinational military forces, "Fico noted.
Participation in monitoring
He mentioned that he could envision Slovakia's participation in monitoring the peace agreement, emphasizing that this is only possible if Kyiv and Moscow
"someday agree on this."
Criticism of the "Coalition of the Resolute"
Fico also criticized the plans of the "Coalition of the Resolute," stating:
"Such agreements cannot be imposed. Fundamentally, I prefer bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation with Ukraine based on joint negotiations of the governments before the so-called 'Coalition of the Resolute' plans,"he assured.
He expressed the opinion that the strategy of Ukraine's allies is "wrong" and leads to "further bloodshed".
"I temporarily represent a different view on the war in Ukraine than Germany or Great Britain, and I do not believe in their strategy. It is wrong. It only leads to further bloodshed,"the Prime Minister emphasized.
It is also worth noting that the neighboring Romania refused to send its troops to Ukraine. However, President Nicusor Dan stated that Bucharest is ready to ensure security in the Black Sea and provide logistical support, including training the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Poland also will not send its troops to Ukraine. However, Polish government head Donald Tusk stated that Warsaw is ready to play a leading role in the logistical and organizational support of Ukraine and countries that host their forces on the territory of Ukraine.
These statements by the Prime Minister of Slovakia evidence the divergence of positions of neighboring countries concerning military involvement in Ukraine. Undoubtedly, the situation remains complex, and the possible monitoring of peace process resolutions may become relevant only if agreements are reached between the conflicting parties. The positions of Slovakia, Romania, and Poland may play an important role in shaping the further strategy of international support for Ukraine.
