Finland reported damage to the underwater power cable with Estonia.
The grid operator Fingrid reported damage to the underwater power cable Estlink 2, which connects Finland and Estonia. The cause of the malfunction is currently unknown. Electrical current is not being transmitted through the Estlink 2 cable between Finland and Estonia due to the damage. Specialists are investigating the cause of the malfunction.
"The possibility of vandalism cannot be excluded. However, we are looking at the situation as a whole and will inform about the cause of the malfunction when it becomes known," said the head of Fingrid's dispatch service, Arto Pahkin.
The connection Estlink 2 was interrupted at 12:26 on Wednesday, December 25. At the time of the disconnection, the power transmission was 658 MW from Finland to Estonia.
The Prime Minister of Finland, Petteri Orpo, stated that the interruption of the current transmission does not affect the electricity supply to the country's citizens.
"Even on Christmas, the authorities are in a state of readiness and are addressing the situation," he emphasized.
Sweden is investigating the damage to two underwater cables in the Baltic Sea, which could be related to the Chinese vessel Yi Peng 3. The vessel likely entered the Gulf of Finland and into Russia.
A damaged underwater communication cable connecting Lithuania and Sweden has also been found. The incident occurred on Sunday morning.
It should be noted that the Chinese vessel was operated by a citizen of Russia.
