Finland Detained a Ship of Russia's Shadow Fleet That May Have Damaged an Undersea Cable.
Finnish law enforcement stopped the ship Eagle S, which may be involved in the damage to the undersea cable in the Baltic Sea, following another incident with cables – this Time between Finland and Estonia and belonging to Russia's shadow fleet. This was reported by Finnish broadcaster Yle.
According to Finnish law enforcement, the ship Eagle S, which was anchored in the Gulf of Finland and was heading from Russia to Egypt, may be involved in the damage to the undersea cable. Monitoring services reported that the ship slowed down significantly at the time the cable was severed. The police are investigating this incident as vandalism, and the cable may have been severed by an anchor dragged along the seabed by the ship.
The ship Eagle S belongs to the Russian shadow fleet and is implicated in evading sanctions. The vessel, owned by Caravella from the United Arab Emirates, is approximately 20 years old and is in poor condition, posing a threat to safety and ecology.
Caravella describes itself on its website as a 'reliable international supplier specializing in the transportation of oil and gas'. However, no information about the services or equipment it provides is available on the site.
Earlier, three undersea communication cables between Estonia and Finland were reported to have failed. This was reported by telecommunications companies Elisa Eesti AS and CITIC Telecom CPC. They claim that the disruptions do not significantly impact end users and do not disrupt communication between the two countries.
