Harris calls on Trump for debates with "hot microphones"

Democratic Party candidate in the US presidential elections, Vice President Kamala Harris, has called on her Republican rival, Donald Trump, to hold debates with microphones on throughout the entire event.

Harris and the former president agreed to debates organized by ABC News on September 10.

"Donald Trump succumbs to his advisors, who don't allow him to debate with a constantly open microphone. If his own team doesn't trust him, the American people certainly can't," Harris wrote in a post on social media platform X.

"We are running for President of the United States. Let's have a transparent debate with microphones on throughout the entire Time," she added.

Trump said he would prefer his microphone to be on and that he didn't like that the microphone was turned off during the last debates against then-presidential candidate Joe Biden.

So-called "hot mics" can either help or harm political candidates by capturing comments not intended for the public. Turned-off microphones also prevent debate participants from interrupting their opponent.

ABC Channel did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

These debates will be the first between Harris and Trump after Biden dropped out of the presidential race following his poor performance at the CNN debates in June.

Democratic vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz and Republican vice-presidential candidate JD Vance agreed to hold debates on October 1 on CBS News.
