Rare bird from the tundra appeared in Rivne region: unique photos of the rough-legged buzzard.
According to ТСН: A rare predatory bird, the rough-legged buzzard, was spotted on the outskirts of Ostrog. This feathered hunter travels thousands of kilometers from the northern tundra to survive the harsh winter months in Ukrainian fields.
Unique photographs of the bird were taken by birdwatcher and photographer Stanislava Ro directly in Ostrog.
The photos captured the 'arctic buzzard' during its winter hunting.
What makes this predator special
The rough-legged buzzard (lat. Buteo lagopus) is a close relative of the common buzzard but is significantly more resilient to cold. It is easy to recognize the rough-legged buzzard by its 'woolly' feathers on its legs, which help it survive in the harsh conditions of the north.
Features of the rough-legged buzzard's life in Ostrog area
Usually, these birds remain in Ukraine from October to March.
The rough-legged buzzard feeds on mice and voles. In tough times, when strong frosts or a lack of rodents occur, it may hunt small birds or even scavenge on carrion.
Experts note that rough-legged buzzards often hunt in open meadows and fields alongside common buzzards.
The number of rough-legged buzzards depends on the number of rodents: if there are many mice, encountering this bird can happen at almost every turn.
For the inhabitants of the Rivne region, this is a great opportunity to observe wildlife without leaving the community. The main thing is to have binoculars or a quality camera and a bit of patience.
It is worth noting that earlier there was talk about the heaviest bird that has ever flown. It defied the laws of physics, as it had a wingspan of up to 7 meters and weighed as much as an adult human.
Observing rough-legged buzzards is not only an opportunity to admire the beauty of wildlife but also a reason to think about biodiversity conservation. The rough-legged buzzard migrating to Ukraine is evidence of climate change, as its presence here depends on temperature conditions. Therefore, every encounter with this bird is special, as it reminds us of the importance of the natural environment around us.
