Belgium’s Foreign Minister Strongly Opposes Normalizing Ties with Russia, Calling It a Sign of Weakness.
Belgium’s Stance on Restoring Relations with Moscow
According to TSN.ua: Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot has firmly rejected the idea of normalizing relations with Russia, warning that doing so would project weakness across Europe. His comments follow remarks by Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, who had raised the possibility of re-engaging with the Kremlin. Prévot argued that as long as Russia excludes Europe from negotiations, any discussion of rapprochement only undermines the unity that the continent urgently needs.
In his statement, Prévot emphasized:
“Today, Russia refuses to include Europe in talks. Until that changes, talk of normalization signals weakness and erodes the European unity we need now more than ever.” – Maxime Prévot
This position contrasts sharply with that of the Belgian prime minister, who noted that 'the European Union is currently unable to force Russia to back down through military or economic means.'
It is also worth noting that Belgium pledged to deliver 30 F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine two years ago, yet not a single aircraft has been provided to date. This situation highlights the complexities of Belgium’s foreign policy and its coordination with international partners.
Broader Trends in European Foreign Policy
Belgium’s refusal to normalize relations with Russia reflects a wider trend across Europe, where many nations are striving to maintain unity in foreign policy amid the escalating conflict in Ukraine. The foreign minister’s stance may signal Belgium’s intent to stand alongside international partners who oppose Russia’s aggressive actions.
At the same time, the delay in delivering fighter jets to Ukraine shows that even within key support initiatives, challenges persist that require time and effort to resolve.
