Sweden’s Intelligence Chief Warns Russia Will Remain a Threat Even After Putin.
Ongoing Threat from Russia
According to UATV: Sweden’s head of military intelligence, Thomas Nilsson, has stated that Russia’s regime will continue to pose a danger to neighboring countries even after Vladimir Putin’s rule ends. He emphasized that Russia has made its choice and that
“there is no turning back”(Thomas Nilsson). Nilsson also pointed out that political opposition within the country has been virtually eliminated, creating additional security risks for the region. This assessment comes amid growing concerns among Nordic and Baltic states about Moscow’s long-term intentions, regardless of leadership changes.
Ukraine-Sweden Cooperation
Against this backdrop, Ukraine and Sweden have signed an agreement to purchase 16 multirole Gripen E fighter jets. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in early 2029. The purchase will be financed through an EU loan backed by the United Kingdom. This deal reflects the determination of both nations to strengthen their defense capabilities in the face of Russian threats.
Poland and the Baltic states are preparing to defend against potential Russian provocations, underscoring the seriousness of the situation in the region. In response, Sweden is actively working with Ukraine to enhance military cooperation and security. However, Nilsson cautioned that Russia’s current economic difficulties do not diminish the threat it poses to its neighbors. The heightened military readiness across Northern Europe signals a collective approach to security, increasingly vital given Russia’s aggressive policies. The strengthening of defenses in the Baltics and Poland further demonstrates the region’s willingness to act jointly if necessary.
