Sanctioned Russian Tanker Spotted by Greenpeace Off the Coast of Germany.
Russian Oil Transported Aboard the Tanker Kira K
According to Espreso.tv: Greenpeace activists have documented the transport of Russian crude oil by the sanctioned tanker Kira K within Germany’s exclusive economic zone, despite demands from a Russian naval vessel to withdraw. The Kira K is currently under sanctions imposed by the European Union, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Ukraine. This incident highlights ongoing Russian efforts to circumvent international restrictions placed on its economy.
The oil carried by the tanker was loaded at the port of Ust-Luga. This event occurs against the backdrop of an expanding 'shadow fleet'—a network of aging tankers Russia uses to export oil while bypassing sanctions. The Kira K was transiting European waters under the flag of Panama, a move that may reflect Russia’s attempt to reduce risks associated with its oil shipments.
International Response and Fresh Sanctions
Natalia Gozak, a Greenpeace representative, stated:
“We have witnessed that Russia is not only using a 'shadow fleet' to evade sanctions but is also ready to demonstratively deploy military vessels to escort it near the shores of the European Union.”Her comments underscore the gravity of a situation in which Russia is willing to use military force to protect its economic interests.
At the same time, the European Union is preparing its 21st sanctions package against Russia, signaling the international community’s continued efforts to counter Moscow’s aggressive actions. This new package aims to further complicate Russia’s ability to conduct business by sidestepping global restrictions. As such, the Kira K incident forms part of a larger pattern illustrating the ongoing economic and political struggle on the international stage.
The confrontation involving the Kira K underscores the urgency of international measures to combat sanctions evasion, which are designed to curtail Russia’s economic capabilities. The persistent use of a 'shadow fleet' and military escorts for such shipments indicates Russia’s willingness to take risks in order to sustain its economy. Coordinated action by the European Union through new sanctions reflects the international community’s determination to keep Moscow’s aggressive behavior in check and uphold global norms.
