UN Chief Rejects Self-Determination for Crimea and Donbas, Affirms Ukrainian Sovereignty.
Statement by the UN Secretary-General
According to UATV: UN Secretary-General António Guterres has affirmed that Crimea and Donbas are territories of Ukraine and are not entitled to self-determination. He stressed that in this situation, the principle of Ukraine's territorial integrity takes precedence. According to Guterres,
“the principle of self-determination cannot be applied in relation to Crimea and Donbas”.
The Situation in Ukraine
Crimea and Donbas remain under the temporary occupation of Russia. In 2025, as a result of Russian attacks in Ukraine, 2,514 civilians were killed and more than 12,000 people were injured. This figure is 31% higher than the data for 2024, indicating an escalation of violence in the region. As the leader of the international organization, Guterres continues to support Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity within the context of the ongoing conflict.
The UN Secretary-General's statement reinforces the international position on Ukraine's territorial integrity, a crucial aspect of the ongoing conflict with Russia. This stance is significant as it aligns with the UN Charter's emphasis on the inviolability of borders. The UN's support could influence future negotiations and diplomatic efforts on the international stage, as member states may take note of the position articulated by Guterres. The rising civilian casualty figures also underscore the urgent need for action to ensure security and stability in the region.
