Amazon to Pay $1.5 Billion to Prime Customers: Who Will Receive Compensation.
According to The Sun: The company AMAZON has agreed to pay an astonishing sum of $2.5 billion (£1.9 billion) due to allegations that it deceived customers while signing up for Prime membership.
Of this amount, $1.5 billion (£1.1 billion) will be directly paid to consumers.
Amazon Prime offers customers free next-day delivery and access to streaming servicesAlamyThe American company has been accused of misleading consumers regarding the Amazon Prime subscription and creating difficulties in canceling it.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which filed the lawsuit against Amazon, reported that around 35 million Prime customers will be eligible for compensation.
Consumers who subscribed to Prime from June 23, 2019, to June 23, 2025, on certain offers and used limited Prime benefits will automatically receive $51 (£38).
The Prime service provides participants with free next-day delivery for selected products, as well as access to music and video streaming platforms. Additionally, members can borrow Kindle books for free and receive unlimited photo storage on Amazon.
It is still unclear whether Prime customers in the UK will receive compensation.
The Sun's press service reached out to Amazon for a comment.
However, there is an option to get your money back for an unwanted Amazon Prime subscription — more details will be discussed below.
What is the case against Amazon?
The FTC accused Amazon of deliberately complicating the process of purchasing products without a Prime subscription.
In particular, in some cases, customers were provided with a button to complete the transaction that did not clearly indicate a subscription.
The complaint also mentioned that canceling the subscription often turned out to be overly complicated.
Amazon was also accused of delaying or rejecting initiatives that could simplify the cancellation process.
The agreement was reached just days before the trial was set to begin in Seattle.
Amazon did not admit any wrongdoing in this case.
The company stated that it was confident in its victory, but chose to settle the matter sooner rather than go through lengthy legal proceedings.
An Amazon representative, Mark Blafkin, told reporters:
“Amazon and our leaders have always adhered to the law, and this settlement allows us to move forward and focus on innovations for our customers.”
“We work very hard to ensure that customers can easily and clearly sign up for or cancel their Prime subscription and receive significant value from our Prime members worldwide.”
As part of the agreement, Amazon commits to not misrepresent the terms of its subscriptions.
The company must fully disclose all costs to customers and obtain their consent before subscribing.
Amazon noted that no additional changes are necessary as the new subscription and cancellation process has been in use for a year.
How can you get back £95
Some customers claim that they were signed up for Amazon without their knowledge.
This can refer to cases where they signed up for a free 30-day trial and were unaware that they needed to cancel the subscription within the trial period to avoid a charge.
If you subscribed to the trial but did not cancel the subscription, you will automatically start receiving an annual or monthly charge depending on your chosen option.
If you are charged an annual fee, £95 will be deducted from your account, and if you chose a monthly fee, it will be £8.99.
You can check if you have Prime by logging into your Amazon account and going to the Prime subscription management section.
If you are a member, the details of your Prime plan and its cost will be displayed there.
Of course, if you are still in the trial period, be sure to cancel your subscription before it ends.
You will be able to use Prime services until the trial period expires.
There are also refund options if you are charged after the trial period ends.
If your free trial period has ended and you are still being charged, go to Subscription Management and click on “Cancel Subscription.”
Amazon states that if you did not use your Prime account after the trial period ended, you will automatically get a refund.
Getting a refund becomes more difficult if you accidentally used Prime services.
You can contact Amazon directly, explain the situation, and request a refund in such cases.
If you signed up for Prime without a free trial, you can cancel your subscription within 14 days of registration.
Again, you will need to go to Subscription Management and click on “Cancel Subscription.”
If you did not use any Prime services during this time, your payment will be automatically refunded.
If you used Prime services within the first 14 days, you will be given a partial refund based on “the use of Prime benefits.”
After 14 days, the only option is to contact Amazon again and explain what happened.

This settlement between Amazon and the Federal Trade Commission is an important step in protecting consumer rights. It emphasizes the need for transparency in subscription terms, as companies must provide clear conditions for their users. The situation surrounding Amazon Prime and its subscriptions has become a vivid example of how important it is for customers to have access to understandable and honest offers.
Ultimately, depending on the outcome of the case, it could lay the groundwork for further reforms in the e-commerce and subscription industries, which can be hoped for not only by Ukrainian users but by consumers worldwide.
