Walt Disney World Almost Built an Entire City for Princesses: What Was Canceled
In 2009, Disney World announced the expansion of Magic Kingdom, which included Enchanted Forest in Fantasyland, where guests could meet princesses. Although the expansion took place and became the largest in the history of Magic Kingdom at that time, the previously planned Enchanted Forest never materialized. The site where it was supposed to appear was an abandoned Skywalk station and the attraction 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Submarine Voyage. The original plans for Fantasyland Enchanted Forest included several mini-lands. The centerpiece would be the Enchanted Forest, where guests could meet Disney princesses like Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Belle. Additionally, there were plans for Pixie Hollow with Tinker Bell and her fairies, as well as other attractions like Prince Charming Regal Carrousel and Peter Pan's Flight attraction. However, due to controversial reception and criticism that the plans were too 'girl-oriented', they were changed. The central Enchanted Forest and some meet-and-greets were replaced. Princess Fairytale Hall and the 'Be Our Guest' restaurant became the final additions to this area. Storybook Circus replaced the Pixie Hollow area and included an expanded Dumbo the Flying Elephant attraction, an interactive queue area, and other themed attractions. The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train also became part of the new development, replacing the Snow White's Scary Adventures attraction. Disney aimed to make this area appealing to both boys and girls, and the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train became one of the most popular attractions at Walt Disney World. There were also plans for a Disneyland in the UK, and images were released showing what it could look like. Additionally, the abandoned Disney World airport was explored with a song on the runway, although planes cannot land there. The expansion of Disney World into Fantasyland Enchanted Forest was aimed at creating a magical world where guests could meet their favorite princesses and other characters, but due to the change in development plans, this area took on a different appearance that also became popular among park visitors.
