The new EU Special Representative for Ukrainian affairs outlined her plans for the future.
Ilva Johansson - EU Special Representative for Ukrainian Affairs
Ilva Johansson, who previously held the position of EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, has now become the Special Representative of the European Union for Ukrainian affairs since July 2025. Her mission is to enhance coordination, protect the interests of Ukrainians, and develop specific measures to support them. Ilva Johansson has repeatedly visited Ukraine since the Russian aggression. She spoke about her work, support for Ukraine, and possible new EU programs in an interview with the FREEDOM channel.
The interview was conducted by Vitaliy Syzov.
Priorities and Responsibilities of the EU Special Representative
In her new position, but not in a new field, Ilva Johansson stated: 'It is a great honor for me to receive this new appointment. I am committed to this cause. We constantly monitor the situation in Ukraine. I am convinced that it is very important not to allow Putin to win. For this, we must support Ukraine and its people. Not only for Ukraine but also for Europe. Therefore, I am very pleased with this new challenge. And, of course, given the continuous attacks by the RF on civilians, it is extremely important to put pressure on Putin.'
He will not sign a peace agreement unless compelled to do so. Therefore, I consider this to be truly important.
Ilva Johansson's role involves supporting Ukrainians who remain rooted and are now in temporary refuge in Europe, dignifying those who wish to return home, creating favorable conditions for those who may return later, and participating in the reconstruction of Ukraine.
After the Russian aggression, the EU appointed Ilva Johansson as the Special Representative for Ukrainian affairs, entrusting her with a series of important tasks related to the support and protection of Ukrainians. The new position involves coordinating actions to assist those who intend to return to their homeland.Read also
