International Legions Integrated into Ukraine's Armed Forces

According to TSN.ua: Foreign volunteer units, known as the International Legions of Defense of Ukraine, are not being dissolved but are instead being formally integrated into the assault brigades of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This restructuring offers new career development and support opportunities for the international volunteers who joined the country's defense. The legions were established in February 2022, with the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine initially projecting that up to 20,000 foreigners might enlist. In reality, however, only several thousand volunteers have joined the units.

Service Conditions for Foreign Volunteers

Some foreign servicemen have signed three-year contracts with the Ukrainian Armed Forces. At the same time, the contract terms allow foreign volunteers to terminate their service after six months. In late 2025, reports emerged suggesting a potential decision to disband the international legions within the Ground Forces. However, the commander of the Second International Legion of Defense of Ukraine, Oleksandr Yakymovych, has clarified that

"the international legion within the Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) continues to function."

The combat missions for legionnaires remain unchanged, according to statements from the Ground Forces. Foreign volunteers also have the opportunity to retrain for roles such as:

  • Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operators
  • Artillery personnel
  • Reconnaissance specialists
  • Logistics and rear support specialists

Experts have described claims of the legions' liquidation as misleading. This indicates that, contrary to rumors, the international units continue to play a vital role in Ukraine's defense capabilities. The integration process highlights the ongoing importance of foreign military support for Ukraine's war effort, reflecting a strategic move to optimize resources and enhance coordination between Ukrainian and international personnel.
