Italy to deliver a second SAMP/T air defense system to Ukraine

Italy is preparing to deliver a second SAMP/T air defense system to Ukraine to protect the population. This was reported by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani in an interview with the newspaper Corriere della Sera. "We have unreservedly provided Kyiv with military, humanitarian, and financial assistance, and now we are preparing to send a second SAMP/T battery to protect the Ukrainian population. Zelensky has never asked for more than we have. Also, we do not have weapons like those of the British or Americans," he said.

Tajani noted that it is currently necessary to stop the Russian offensive and expressed hope for a serious peace conference to be held by the end of the current year.

What is SAMP/T

SAMP/T, also known as MAMBA, is a joint Franco-Italian development. This system is capable of simultaneously tracking dozens of targets and neutralizing up to ten. It is noteworthy that SAMP/T is the only European system capable of intercepting ballistic missiles. The first such system was jointly delivered to Ukraine by Italy and France in 2023.

Let us recall that earlier Ukraine called on its allies to accelerate the delivery of air defense systems after the attack on Poltava. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that only the Patriot and SAMP/T systems are capable of protecting against ballistic missiles.
