Italy Backs Ukraine's EU Bid but Keeps Balkan Expansion as Its Top Priority.
Italy's Dual Focus on Ukraine and the Balkans
According to Novyny.live: While affirming its support for Ukraine's accession to the European Union, Italy is directing its primary diplomatic focus toward the Western Balkans. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated that his country will continue to aid Ukraine but emphasized that the Balkan nations remain Italy's foremost regional priority.
'We support Ukraine's accession, but the Balkans come first. We have obligations to them, and they are a priority for us,' Antonio Tajani noted.
During discussions on support for Ukraine, Tajani also pointed to Italy's commitments to the countries of the Balkan region. In a related development, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, indicated that the European Union is preparing its largest winter aid package for Ukraine. This comes as the EU grapples with multiple enlargement challenges simultaneously.
For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed the need for a 'fast-track' procedure for Ukraine's EU membership, highlighting the urgency of his country's integration into European structures.
A Delicate Balancing Act
Italy's stance illustrates the delicate balance European nations must strike between supporting Ukraine and honoring long-standing commitments to neighboring Balkan states, which are also pursuing European integration. The emphasis on the Balkans likely reflects Italy's strategic interests in the region, as Balkan stability is crucial for broader European security.
At the same time, support for Ukraine remains a vital component of Italy's foreign policy, especially in the context of ongoing Russian aggression and global efforts to restore peace in Eastern Europe.
