According to TSN.ua: While supporting Ukraine's bid to join the European Union, Italy has made clear that the nations of the Western Balkans remain its primary focus. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani emphasized Italy's existing commitments to these Balkan states, which he described as crucial to the broader European integration project. He stated that assistance for Ukraine will continue, but initial attention must be directed toward the Balkans.

In an interview with Corriere della Sera, Tajani underscored that Italy views the Balkans as a priority. His planned visit to Belgrade in early April highlights the region's significance in Italian foreign policy. Montenegro and Serbia already hold candidate status and are in accession talks, while Albania and North Macedonia are also official candidates. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a candidate but has not yet begun negotiations, and Kosovo has formally applied for membership.

Tajani noted: 'We support Ukraine's accession, but the Balkans come first, as we have obligations there and it is our priority. We will help Ukraine, which has a certain path to follow.'
