Italy refuses new weapons supplies to Ukraine: what does Tajani's statement mean.
According to ТСН: Italy has decided to stop military funding, becoming the first country in Europe to openly declare its intention not to provide Ukraine with additional weapons during peace negotiations. Rome assessed its participation in the Alliance's program as 'premature.'
'If there is peace - weapons are not needed'
Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed the government's position in Brussels. He believes that if diplomatic efforts are successful, the need for military buildup will disappear.
'If we reach an agreement and hostilities cease, weapons will no longer be needed. Other things will be required, such as security guarantees,' Tajani told reporters.
This statement clearly signals a change in the strategy of Georgia Meloni's government towards Ukraine. According to information, financial resources in Italy have been exhausted, and the internal coalition is facing tension.
What is the PURL program and Ukraine's needs
This refers to the PURL program, launched by NATO after direct weapon supplies to Ukraine from Washington were reduced in the summer. This initiative allows allies to purchase American weapons for transfer to Kyiv. As early as October, Rome signaled its readiness to join this program but has now changed its mind.
Tajani's position contradicts the calls of heads of Europe's defense lobby, who warn of the need to increase weapons production, despite the prospects for peace negotiations.
Moreover, Ukraine emphasizes its critical need for assistance. Kyiv noted that it requires additional supplies within the PURL program amounting to 1 billion euros to protect itself during the winter period. Currently, about two-thirds of NATO members are participating in this initiative.
Recall that Ukraine urgently needs an additional 1 billion euros to purchase American weapons, including Patriots and artillery, to strengthen its defense against Russian attacks. This relates to the program that finances the purchase of American weapons largely with funds provided by Kyiv's European partners.
Thus, Italy's decision not to provide Ukraine with additional military aid raises questions about Kyiv's further plans to strengthen its defense amid possible threats. It is clear that the Ukrainian government is trying to find ways to secure the necessary resources to support its position in the conflict, considering external political changes.
