The Legal Battle Between Petro Poroshenko and Volodymyr Zelenskyy

According to Espreso.tv: The Cassation Administrative Court, operating within Ukraine's Supreme Court, is currently handling a lawsuit filed by former President Petro Poroshenko against incumbent President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The case challenges the indefinite sanctions imposed by the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC). These proceedings have been ongoing for nearly a year and a half, having commenced on April 17, 2025. Zelenskyy enacted the NSDC's sanctions decision in February 2025. This legal dispute is part of a broader pattern of political tensions in Ukraine, where past and present leaders often clash over executive powers and national security measures.

Next Steps in the Court Process

The next court hearing is scheduled for July 10, 2025. During a meeting between Poroshenko and Zelenskyy on May 26, 2025, the latter did not raise any matters related to this ongoing litigation.

“No. Obviously not. Because that was not the subject of my meeting with Zelenskyy. We have a court for that,” stated Petro Poroshenko.

Illia Novikov, Poroshenko's legal representative, expressed concerns about potential interference with the court's decision, stating:

“We have certain information, including names of individuals who, acting in the interests of the defendant, the Presidential Office, and the president personally, are likely attempting to influence the court's ruling.”

Additionally, attorney Ihor Holovan noted that 'the court's decision can no longer be considered timely, but it can still be lawful and fair.' Petro Poroshenko also emphasized that 'regardless of the final outcome, my rights have been grossly violated. This is a fundamental legal principle.'

As the Cassation Administrative Court continues to review the case, the public is closely watching for the next developments in this process. This case holds significant implications not only for both politicians but also for Ukrainian society, as it raises questions about judicial fairness and potential political influence on the justice system. Future court rulings could impact the country's political landscape and public trust in state institutions and their independence.
