Israel freed 90 Palestinian prisoners as part of an agreement with Hamas.
Israel freed 90 Palestinian prisoners in accordance with an agreement with the Hamas movement regarding the release of hostages held in the Gaza Strip and the establishment of a peaceful regime. This was reported by The Jerusalem Post.
According to the publication, the Palestinian prisoners were transferred from several prisons across the country to Ofer Prison, located near Jerusalem. There, they underwent security checks, identification, and medical examinations before their final release.
78 prisoners were transported by Red Cross buses to the Bethlehem checkpoint in the West Bank for release, while the Israeli police controlled the transfer of 12 prisoners to East Jerusalem.
The majority of the released prisoners are women. One of the prisoners, who was under 18 at the Time of arrest, was convicted of murder.
It is noted that Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire agreement that includes a six-week ceasefire period and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza and the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinians.
The agreement was reached after lengthy negotiations mediated by Egyptian and Qatari intermediaries, supported by the United States. It will come into effect on January 19.
US President Joe Biden confirmed the agreement
US President Joe Biden officially confirmed the agreement between Israel and Hamas. It is noted that this agreement will stop hostilities in the Gaza Strip, increase humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians, and reunite hostages with their families after more than 15 months in captivity.
