Potatoes, carrots, and garlic surprised with prices in different regions of Ukraine.

Price gap for basic vegetables in Ukrainian markets
There remains a significant price gap for basic vegetables in Ukraine's food markets, reports 'Khvylia'.
According to price monitoring data for the end of February 2025, the price of potatoes in Kyiv is 18% lower than in Lviv, while the price of garlic in the Lviv region is the highest in the country. In Odesa, on the other hand, an unexpected rise in the price of young carrots is occurring.
Potatoes
At the 'Stolychniy Market', prices for potatoes fluctuate between 22-27 UAH/kg, while in chain supermarkets, young potatoes cost 44.90 UAH/kg. Economists explain such a gap by the marketing strategies of retail chains that promote early varieties as premium segment products.
In Lviv, the retail price for potatoes ranges from 33-37 UAH/kg, while in Odesa, prices fluctuate between 26.8-29.3 UAH/kg, which is explained by proximity to producers and reduced logistics costs.
Carrots
The Kyiv region has faced a 28.5% increase in carrot prices in one month, reaching a price of 36 UAH/kg. The 42% reduction in stock reserves and increased exports to the European Union are key factors leading to such price changes.
In Lviv, the price for carrots is 53.20 UAH/kg, which is explained by environmental positioning and additional processing. In Odesa, the price for carrots is expected to be between 31.5-34 UAH/kg.
Garlic
In Kyiv's markets, the price for garlic is set at 160.15 UAH/kg, with a significant difference between domestic and imported options:
- Ukrainian garlic: 142-155 UAH/kg;
- Chinese garlic: 168-175 UAH/kg;
- Spanish garlic: 190-210 UAH/kg.
In Lviv, the price for garlic stands at 159.60 UAH/kg, with weekly seasonal fluctuations of up to 12%. In Odesa, the price for garlic remains at 148-153 UAH/kg.
Overall, vegetable prices fluctuate significantly across different markets in Ukraine, determined by marketing strategies, environmental positioning, and logistical factors. The recent rise in prices for carrots and garlic also has its reasons, such as reduced supplies and increased exports.
