Food prices in Ukraine soar: how much more expensive are potatoes and eggs.
According to inkorr.com: Food prices in Ukraine have skyrocketed during the years of war, and this is most felt in basic categories – vegetables, meat, dairy products, and eggs.
According to the publication 'Voice of the Carpathians', potatoes have increased the most in price – their cost has risen by 150 percent. This is due to a shortage caused by unfavorable weather conditions. Farmers in various regions of the country report heat and drought, which negatively affected the harvest. In August of last year, the market price for a kilogram of potatoes was 25 hryvnias, and now major supermarkets offer them at a slightly lower price.
Egg prices have also risen significantly. In February of this year, a dozen cost 60 hryvnias, while in July the price fluctuated between 65 and 80 hryvnias. By comparison, in 2022 one egg could be bought for 4-8 hryvnias. However, in September of this year, the prices for eggs have slightly decreased.
Rising prices for meat and mushrooms
The meat market is also seeing price increases. According to the 'Institute of Agrarian Economics', last year the price of beef ribs rose by over 7 percent, reaching 168.95 hryvnias per kilogram, while the price for goulash increased by almost 20%, settling at 301.32 hryvnias. Chicken prices are also rising: fillets cost up to 172.63 hryvnias per kilogram, and thighs up to 121.63 hryvnias. However, the price of a whole chicken remains stable at 85.60 hryvnias.
It's also worth noting the rise in prices for wild mushrooms, which have been a source of income for many residents of the Carpathians. This year, due to the heat and lack of rainfall, the mushroom crop has dried up, leading to shortages. The initial cost of fresh mushrooms was 150 hryvnias per kilogram, while dried mushrooms were sold for prices ranging from 1500 to 1800 hryvnias per kilogram.
More expensive food products become inaccessible to part of the population
Thus, even traditionally affordable products for Ukrainians are gradually becoming inaccessible to certain groups of the population, and basic food items are increasingly approaching the price of delicacies.
Currently, Ukrainian media are focusing on rising food prices due to the war. The main reasons cited are unfavorable weather conditions and various factors affecting harvest collections. This has led to basic products becoming hard to reach for some segments of the population.
