Strike on Dovzhenko Film Studio

According to Novyny.live: Andriy Donchyk, the general director of Dovzhenko Film Studio, reported severe damage inflicted on the studio by two Russian missiles. This attack was part of a combined bombardment of Ukraine that took place on the night of June 15, primarily targeting Kyiv.

The strike destroyed 100,000 costumes stored in the costume workshop. Donchyk stated:

“That was the first missile. The second, unfortunately, landed directly on the studio grounds and obliterated the costume workshop—or costume storage—where, as you may have read, about 100,000 costumes made for films were kept.”
Additionally, approximately 300 windows were shattered, along with doors and windows in the studio buildings.

Impact on Cultural Heritage

The Dovzhenko Film Studio spans 16 hectares and includes 18 structures. After assessing the damage, Donchyk noted,

“It turned out that there is not a single intact window anywhere on the studio grounds. The blast wave was that powerful.”
Among other losses from the attack, the film archive—which holds about 600 films, some of which are unique copies—was also affected.

This event serves as yet another stark reminder of the war’s destructive toll on Ukraine’s cultural heritage.

The attack on Dovzhenko Film Studio highlights not only physical devastation but also a threat to Ukraine’s cultural identity. The destruction of costumes and film reels containing unique movies jeopardizes the preservation of the nation’s history and art. In wartime, such acts of aggression can have lasting consequences for Ukraine’s cultural development, particularly in the film industry, which has already suffered significant losses. This situation has raised alarm among artists and cultural figures striving to safeguard heritage and continue creative work under dire conditions.
