Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Warns of Continued Hungarian Obstruction Under Orbán.
Klimkin's Warning on Hungary
According to Novyny.live: Pavlo Klimkin, Ukraine's former foreign minister, has expressed deep concern that Hungary will continue to exert pressure on Ukraine if Prime Minister Viktor Orbán remains in power. Klimkin stated that Orbán actively employs various methods to obstruct Ukrainian interests, creating a persistent diplomatic challenge. This tension occurs within the broader context of Ukraine's reliance on Western support for its defense and reconstruction.
“If Orbán stays, he will keep throwing a wrench in the works and demanding concessions at every turn” – Pavlo Klimkin
Instances of Hungarian Pressure
A prime example of this pressure is Hungary's blockade of a 90-billion-euro European Union aid package for Ukraine. This move has drawn sharp criticism from numerous Ukrainian politicians and experts, who argue it will severely damage Ukraine's economic stability during a critical period.
Relations further deteriorated following Hungary's detention of Ukrainian employees of the state-owned savings bank, 'Oschadbank', on February 5. The action caused alarm within the Ukrainian community. However, on March 6, Andrii Sybiha, head of Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed the detained individuals had been released.
Consequently, the state of Ukraine-Hungary relations remains a pressing issue, particularly given the political landscape in Hungary and Orbán's potential to influence matters critical to Kyiv. With Viktor Orbán continuing his political tenure, the need for stable bilateral ties is increasingly evident. Ukraine must proactively seek ways to reduce tensions through diplomatic channels and international forums. Simultaneously, as an EU member, Hungary must consider the bloc's shared interests and obligations in supporting Ukraine's reforms and defense of its territorial integrity.
